Sakura Matsuri

Spring is a lovely time of year to visit the Cowra Japanese Garden. The Cherry Blossoms are in abundance and signal the arrival of warmer weather. The blossoms come at slightly different times dependent on the winter weather but they are usually at their best from late September for around 3 or 4 weeks. A wide variety of uniquely themed events, set in the magnificent garden is what awaits visitors to the annual Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival) which is held on a weekend in late September. The 2012 event will be held on Saturday the 22nd of September with the reconciliation service to be held the following day on Sunday the 23rd.

Sakura Matsuri is a much loved event in the Cowra cultural calendar. It is a time when the beauty of nature in full bloom and the centuries old traditions of Japan are combined; and you are invited to enjoy the result.

Now in its 23rd year at the Cowra Japanese Garden, Sakura Matsuri has developed into a showcase of Japanese arts, crafts and cultural activities. Be part of a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, learn the secrets of Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging), calligraphy or bonsai, watch the skill of the martial art experts or see real Sumo wrestlers in action; these are just a few of the activities you can enjoy during Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival).

The Cherry Blossoms flower long after Sakura Matsuri has finished and for those wishing to visit the garden at quieter times we recommend visiting in early to mid October when you can enjoy a more tranquil atmosphere.
